Hi, Java Verified is too expensive. We have so far spent close to 20-30k in getnitg our apps verified throughout the years. Ours is a third party software application that we license to different companies and every company requires changes to the application to fit their business needs. Every time one of our clients request a change we have to go through the whole process again. As a result we had to cut down drastically on the functionality of the application, when we know we could have made it powerful as IPhone or Blackberry or Android or Windows Mobile. We were not even able to create custom builds for the different phone platforms that supports advanced optional api because we have to get it verified for our different clients individually, and every time one of our clients request a change we have to get all the apps verified again. As a result we were forced to go with the lowest common denominator of only midp2.0 and cldc1.1 and not use any of the features of the powerful optional api. We went ahead and pooled more resources into iphone, android, blackberry and windows mobile as we pay fixed costs per year and do not have to worry about cost of upgrading our applications again and again. As a company dealing with international clients we made a conscious decision to not put additional resources into the J2ME platform as we have better alternatives. This limits our reach a lot, but at the same time ensured our company does not go under. Let me explain an other scenario we faced .We submitted the same build to 2 different testing companies using the same credentials. None of them returned back with any consistent test results. One did not like how the table looked. Other wanted to know why the data from the server does not make sense to him. There is no way for us to communicate with the testing companies and explain. We submit the application and wait for a pass/fail result, make the change ( even when it does not make sense ) and pray that the application passes the criteria. It usually took us paying 2-3 times for each app before we could get a pass result. The changes you are talking about to the UTC goes only half way. How can a startup company with an idea in their mind compete if they have to go through the headaches every company faced in trying to get the application certified? Why cannot you let the consumers decide which application is best? If the application is bad looking consumers will not use it. It is as simple as that. Why do the companies have to go through the red tape and be at the mercy of 3 testing companies ? There is less cause for mischief by the application due to the security sandbox. The privilege you are talking about in granting trusted status is only to a selected few who have consistently proven that their applications meet the UTC criteria. How can a startup company in a third world country meet this criteria? Bottom line.. unless you guys open up like the android or iphone platform, J2ME is going to die. We as a company are sick of building apps on the J2ME platform as it is only dragging us down and not letting us compete in the market. Charge us a flat fee per year and let the consumers decide whether they like the app or not. With your tight control on the platform you are only shooting yourself in the foot. It is only a matter of time before android or some other platform becomes as prevalent as J2ME ( give or take 1-2 yrs ) and when that happens nobody will code for J2ME.Best Regards,Amar..
